Jesus Wants To Know

Why won’t you do what He says?

Michael Wyatt

Jesus asks the question in Luke 6:46, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say.” He then tells the story of two different builders. One is likened to that person who hears the words of the Lord and does them. He is one who builds his house on a solid foundation, and it could not be shaken. The other is one who hears but does not do what Jesus says, and he is likened to one that builds his house without a foundation. And it not only was shaken, but it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Why would anyone call Him Lord, but then not do what He says?

When it comes to our eternal salvation Jesus made several statements as to what is required. Let’s notice a few of them:

John 8:24: “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”

Luke 13:3: “I tell you, Nay: but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”

Matthew 10:32: “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”

Mark 16:16: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”

Here are the clear words of the Lord. Someone may quickly respond, “But that is not all that He said.” And that person would be absolutely right. But the point is, Jesus definitely said this. Everyone would have to agree with that. Then why don’t you do what He says? Why would anyone say they were doing what Jesus said, and fail to do this? Or, you may have done some of this, but not all of it. I still ask, how can you say you are doing what Jesus said, and not do what He has said in these few passages?

Numerous people will come before the judgement seat of Jesus, be placed on His left hand, and hear Him say, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). It may be then that they will say, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works?” But Jesus will say, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven…And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:21-23).

Are you doing what Jesus has said? If you gave your child two things to do, and he only did one, has that child done what you have said? Partially, yes. But we all agree that the child has not done all that you said. The same thing is true in our relationship with Jesus.

why haven’t you done what He said?
