Ladies Day 2010
Jeremy Northrop
This coming Saturday, Lord willing, will be the second annual ladies day of the Ashland church of Christ. In thinking about the day, there are several women in the Bible which might come to mind.
Ruth was a great godly lady who presented care for her mother-in-law, Naomi. She was willing to convert to God’s way of life and care for her family. Today, women can follow after Ruth’s godly example.
Romans 16:1 says, “I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea….” Here, Paul mentions a godly sister in the Lord and describes her as a servant. In the next verse, Paul asked the church to receive her.
In Proverbs 31, the mother of Lemuel instructs him about what he needs to look for in a woman (wife). The description is often ascribed as “the virtuous woman.” Godly women today can seek to be this woman described here.
Acts 16 mentions a woman named Lydia. She is described as a seller of purple. She was a lady who was converted and eventually opened her home up to saints.
In Romans 16:3-4, Paul mentions a godly couple named Priscilla and Aquila. This godly couple worked with Paul in his mission journeys. Paul commended them here and in his writing to the Corinthians (1Corinthians 16:19).
Philippians 4:1-3 mentions two women who needed to be of the same mind. Paul exhorted a “true companion” to help these sisters to reconcile their differences. Today, people need to follow these godly examples and the instructions of Paul.
The book of 2John is written to the elect lady, a person whom John greatly respected. She was commended for having godly children (2John 4). She was warned of the possible deceivers in the book. The book actually concludes by mention of her sister and the greetings she sends to the elect lady through John.
There are certainly others which can be mentioned but these are enough to show God indeed has a work for ladies. A ladies day is a day in which their work can be examined in a great way. It promises to be a good day for all who attend.
